Struggling Tigers Open ACC Play Against Virginia Tech

This time last week, Clemson was 6-1 and ranked 13th in the country. Fast forward and the Tigers sit at 6-5 and riding a 4 game skid entering ACC play tonight vs. Virginia Tech.

After a great start to the season, Clemson faltered in 3 straight against South Carolina before getting embarrassed 18-10 by Western Carolina on Tuesday. They will look to Junior right hander Daniel Gossett to stop the bleeding and get the Tigers back on track. Gossett (1-0) pitched well in his last start against South Carolina before giving up a grand slam in the 5th to close the Tiger lead to 6-5. From there, the bullpen wasn’t able to hold on, giving Gossett the no decision.

Clemson enters the game with some of the hottest hitters in the ACC. Steven Duggar, Tyler Krieger, and Garrett Boulware have all reached base in each of the Tigers’ games this season. On top of that, Krieger is hitting .419 with 5 stolen bases while Junior Tyler Slaton is playing at a .391 clip.

Things To Know

  • Virginia Tech (6-4) comes in 5-2 in their last 7 games. The weekend series will mark the 30th meeting between the two schools.
  • Freshman Chris Okey leads the Tigers with 12 RBI
  • Steven Duggar’s 19 game hitting streak was snapped on Tuesday when he went 0-5 vs. Western Carolia
  • Tyler Krieger is currently riding a 12 game hitting streak, dating back to the final game of 2013.

Hopefully Clemson can play well in the ACC and run all the way to the College World Series. And if you’re looking ahead, make sure to grab CWS tickets from Red Zone Tickets!
